Broncos Reach Deal With Saints For Sean Payton

Jan 31, 2023 4:42 PM

The Denver Broncos and New Orleans Saints have reached an agreement on compensation for Sean Payton, according to sources.

The Saints will receive the Broncos' 2023 first-round pick (No. 30 overall) and their 2024 second-round pick for Payton and the Saints' 2024 third-round selection, sources said.

The deal clears the way for Payton to become the next coach of the Broncos.

Ravens Believe Lamar Jackson Wants To Sign Long-Term

Jan 19, 2023 9:25 PM

The Baltimore Ravens publicly insisted on Thursday that they believe Lamar Jackson wants to remain with the franchise long-term.

"I truly believe Lamar wants to finish his career in Baltimore," Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said Thursday in the team's 45-minute, end-of-season news conference.

DeCosta spoke with Jackson on Thursday and began the media session by saying he was excited to restart contract negotiations with him.

If no new deal is completed by March, Baltimore will place the franchise tag on Jackson to keep him from becoming an unrestricted free agent.

Without a new deal, the Ravens can keep Jackson in Baltimore for only two more seasons with the franchise tag.

DeCosta declined to say whether the Ravens would entertain trade offers for him.

"That's not something we're going to talk about at this point," DeCosta said.

Report: Dolphins Could Make Play For Lamar Jackson After Draft

Jan 19, 2023 9:04 AM

It appears likely that the Baltimore Ravens will use the franchise tag on Lamar Jackson if they can't sign him to a long-term contract this offseason.

Doing so would allow other teams to negotiate with Jackson and sign him to an offer sheet. If the Ravens don't match an offer sheet, they would get two first-round draft picks from Jackson's new team.

There have been rumors that Jackson would like to return to his hometown of Miami and play for the Dolphins. However, the Dolphins don't have a 2023 first-round pick.

There is a loophole for Miami, though, if they were able to sign Jackson to an offer sheet after this spring's NFL Draft. Then, if the Ravens don't match, Baltimore would get the Dolphins' first-round picks in 2024 and 2025.

GM Expects Kirk Cousins To Remain With Vikings

Jan 19, 2023 8:53 AM

Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah expects Kirk Cousins to remain the team's starting quarterback next season.

Cousins, 34, signed an extension last offseason through the 2023 season. The question now appears to be whether he will receive another short-term extension or play next season in the final year of his deal.

"It's our expectation that he'll be our quarterback," Adofo-Mensah said. "I can't say exactly how that would look. We have everything at our disposal. We'll consider all those things just like we would with everyone else on the roster."

Cousins is set to earn $30 million and count $36.25 million against the team's salary cap in 2023. An extension would make it more difficult to move on from him as he moves into his late 30s, but it likely would lower his 2023 cap hit.

Trey Lance's Post On Ran Carthon Ignites Speculation On Titans

Jan 18, 2023 10:10 AM

The future of Trey Lance with the San Francisco 49ers is uncertain given the emergence of Brock Purdy this season.

Lance further raised questions by posting a trio of fingers-crossed emojis over a photo of Ran Carthon, who was hired away from the 49ers by the Tennessee Titans to become their general manager.

The Titans could be on the market for a quarterback in 2023. Ryan Tannehill has a $36.6 million cap number and a $27 million base salary in the final season of his deal.

The 49ers traded their own first rounder in 2021 plus two more firsts and a third rounder to move up to select Lance. Lance entered 2022 as San Francisco's starter but suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2.

Aaron Rodgers To Contemplate Future With Packers, 'Somewhere Else'

Jan 17, 2023 8:54 PM

Aaron Rodgers said on Tuesday he still thinks he can play in the NFL at a high level, whether it's for the Green Bay Packers or another team.

"I think I can win MVP again in the right situation," Rodgers said. "Right situation, is that Green Bay or is that somewhere else? I'm not sure. But I don't think you should shut down any opportunity. Like I said during the season, that's got to be both sides actually wanting to work together moving forward, and I think there's more conversations to be had."

Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst have expressed an interest in having Rodgers back. Last week, Gutekunst reiterated that the three-year, $150 million contract they gave to Rodgers last March was a commitment that "wasn't certainly for this year."

Packers Want To Keep Aaron Rodgers In 2023

Jan 13, 2023 5:34 PM

The Green Bay Packers are not interested in moving on from Aaron Rodgers this offseason.

"If we were? Sure, absolutely," Brian Gutekunst said during a 30-minute news conference to wrap up the season. "You've got to be honest with him, you know what I mean? I think he deserves that if we get to that point. We're not at that point."

Rodgers is not ready to say whether he plans to return for 2023 or if it will be with the Packers.

"I got to see what it feels like once I get away from this," Rodgers said after Sunday's loss to the Lions.

Rodgers is only one year into a three-year, $150 million extension he signed with the Packers last March. Rodgers would make a guaranteed $59.465 million if he played in 2023.

"We made a really big commitment to him last offseason, so I think as we did that it wasn't certainly for just this year," Gutekunst said of the recently completed 2022 season. "He's going to take his time, and the communication will be pretty constant as we move forward."

The Packers also must decide by early May whether to exercise the fifth-year option for 2024 on backup quarterback Jordan Love's contract. That would be worth around $20 million. Gutekunst has said previously that he could not foresee having both Rodgers and Love on the roster in 2024.
